GREATHOUSE VISITOR CENTER: View the workings of a 20th-century sand mine and learn about the lives of 19th-century coal miners in the Greathouse Visitor Center. See mining artifacts and photographs from the mining period, and view a video featuring former Mt. Diablo coalfield residents.
The Greathouse Visitor Center is open from l0a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays March through November (closed December and January). The parking fee is $5 per vehicle. For information call (925) 757-2620.
HAZEL-ATLAS MINE: Explore the underground through a guided tour and learn the mine's history, geology, and the methods used to mine the sandstone.
Hour-long advance reservation tours are available to the general public on weekends at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. March through November (closed December, January, and February). First-come, first-served tours are offered at noon and 3 p.m. only. The fee is $3 per person. Tours are strictly limited to ages 7 and up. To make weekend reservations call 1-888-EBPARKS.
School groups (third grade and up) and other organized groups (10 persons minimum) can take a mine tour on weekdays March through November. Advance reservations are required: call (925) 757-2620 for information.
