September 6: Garin Apple Festival, Garin Regional Park, noon-4 p.m.

Enjoy an old-fashioned harvest this fall at one of the Park District’s most popular events--the annual Garin Apple Festival at Garin Regional Park in Hayward on Saturday, September 6, from 12-4 p.m. Garin is home to an antique apple orchard with varieties of apples you won’t find anywhere else. Take this opportunity to taste-test dozens of varieties, including antique varieties unavailable anywhere except at the Apple Festival! Try your hand at pressing apple cider or hand-cranking ice cream, and then taste the “fruit” of your labor. Tours are given throughout the day, plus there are plenty of activities for parents and kids, from old-fashioned square dancing to old-fashioned games, crafts, and lots more. August 23: Cajun-Zydeco Music Festival, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Hear popular national and local Cajun/Zydeco bands, including Roy Carrier and the Night Rockers, Lil Guyland Leday and The Zydeco Family and Friends, Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic, Queen Ida and her Zydeco Band, and the Creole Bells (bands subject to change). Bring the family for music, dance lessons, delicious Cajun and Creole food. Visit the farm animals and shop vendor booths. There will be dance lessons, specialty vendors, and delicious Cajun food. Join us for some Alameda hometown Independence Day fun as we "swim" along the parade route costumed to match this year's theme, "Alameda: Clean and Green."

July 4: Independence Day Celebration, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Join us for a fun-filled community festival, 1900-style! Celebrate July 4th at Ardenwood with rousing patriotic music from a brass band on the lawn and fiddle music in the farmyard. There will be games, contests and races for everyone all day long. Test your skill at naildriving, egg toss and watermelon seed spitting or join a bucket brigade and tug-of-war contest. July 4: 4th of July Flag Hill Hike, Sunol Regional Wilderness, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Learn the folklore and geology of Flag Hill as we slowly climb its steep slope 1.26 miles to the top in celebration of its naming. Parking fees apply where charged.

July 4: Martinez 4th of July Fireworks, Martinez Regional Shoreline, starts at 9:15 p.m.

July 13, 20, 27: Wheat Harvesting, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 1-2:30 p.m.

Follow a plump wheat berry's journey from the farm's field to your table. Help thresh and mill the wheat into wholesome, stone-ground flour. See an amazing turn-of-the-last-century mechanical threshing machine in action, and sample a tasty whole wheat treat fresh from the oven.

Enjoy magnificent bay views and learn the history of this original Regional Park. On a 2-mile hike through shaded woodlands and open grasslands, we’ll climb briskly to the top of Wildcat Peak. June 7: 42nd Annual Sand Castle & Sand Sculpture Contest, Crown Memorial State Beach, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Create a work of art or admire others' creations. View a nesting site teeming with several-hundred pairs of endangered California least terns and their chicks. A wildlife biologist will be aboard our bus 'blind' to interpret behavior and answer questions. Learn how you can protect these extraordinary birds and their habitat. Join us for the 9th annual Butterfly Festival. Dedicated to increasing the numbers and species of butterflies in Bay Area landscapes, the festival offers a day of adventure and learning that allows you to get close to nature's 'flying jewels.' May 17 & 18: Bay Area Storytelling Festival, Kennedy Grove Regional Recreation Area, 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

Four nationally-known tellers will delight you with folktales, movement, music and more. Carol Birch tells timeless traditional tales with intelligence and sly humor. Drawing from his African-American roots, Baba Jamal Koram tells stories with compelling authority. The music of the conch shell and the mbira moves through the performances of Bahamian-born Derek Burrows. Olga Loya of California honors her Hispanic heritage through lively, poetic performances. May 24-26: The 24th Annual Rattlesnake Rendezvous, Sunol Regional Wilderness, 9 a.m., May 24 - 2 p.m., May 26

Travel far back in time and join our intrepid band of primitives for a weekend of Stone Age living skills. Aside from modern sleeping gear and clothing, we will experience as closely as possible the rigors and satisfactions of living in the old ways. Experience fire starting, flint knapping, cordage, cooking over an open fire (no metal pots, pans or grills allowed), music, tracking, bead making, storytelling and music around the campfire and so much more! May 26: Memorial Day on the Farm, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

On this historic holiday we invite you to the farm for the day. Bring a picnic and lollygag on the lawn, while your children roll up their sleeves, help with the morning chores (11am - noon). Taste some farm baked cookies from our outdoor country kitchen (11am -1pm). Try your skills at some old time games (noon-1pm). Take a stroll with an interpreter and learn what life was like long ago (2-3pm). At 3pm we will participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. Disabled accessible. Tours through the Hazel-Atlas Silica-Sand Mine will be offered on a first-come/first-served basis. Purchase tickets at the temporary visitor center located at the park headquarters. Runners and walkers are welcome! Women only. Take in the scenic beauty of Alameda's Bay Trail and breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. End the race at Crown Memorial Park, with a women focused race expo and 1 mile kids' run. Pre-registration is required. Register online at See Jane Run website. April 5-6: Hazel-Atlas Mine Re-Open Celebration, Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, Noon-4 p.m.

Join the open house celebration of the greatly expanded Hazel-Atlas silica sand mine tour at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch on April 5th and 6th. Take a quick peek or a leisurely stroll through 810 feet of this 1930s era mine. It's our opening weekend of mine operation for the year, so come enjoy some magnificent history and spectacular underground features. Staff and volunteers will be stationed throughout the mine to point out features and answer questions. Reservations are not required for this special event. April 19: California Native Plant Sale, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Annual sale of California native plants, including shrubs, trees, perennials, and many plants not available in a nursery. Horticultural advice gladly given! Explore the Garden and buy plants to take home (bring boxes). Rain or shine. Click here to learn more.

April 19: Tartan Day Scottish Fair, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Celebrate Tartan Day and join in the pageantry as Scottish folk from all over the area gather their clans and celebrate their heritage. Enjoy bagpipe bands, highland dancing, traditional Scottish food, and historic re-enactments. There will also be Clan Society exhibits and a special Children's Glenn where they can partake in Highland games, a traditional haggis toss, arts & crafts, storytelling and perhaps find fairies. Special musical performances by Peter Daldry, Culann's Hounds and the Fremont Police Department Pipe Band.

Presented by the East Bay Scottish Association and East Bay Regional Park District Interpretive Staff. Special Event Fee: $10 adults/ $6 seniors/ $5 children (4-17). Free parking. Wheelchair accessible. Event ends 4:30 p.m.; no admissions after 4 p.m.

Celebrate Easter at Middle Harbor Shoreline with fun family games for your little ones, including a historic egg roll at 1 p.m., a potato spoon race at 1:30 p.m., and a sack race at 2 p.m. Please organize your own egg hunt.

March 23: Egg Decorating, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Many cultures decorate eggs. Join us to experiment with some farm-made dyes and various techniques. We'll bring the boiled eggs and colors, you'll bring your imagination.

It's somewhere on the farm! Listen for clues when you hear the bell clanging in the Farmyard. Whoever finds it, gets to keep it, and receives good luck all spring!

A quirky 128-year-old White House tradition comes to the farm. We have our own fabulous green lawn and big white house. Bring a picnic and enjoy holiday fun!

Celebrate the holiday season in Victorian style! Visit the beautifully decorated Patterson House, sing Christmas carols, search for the Yule log, and meet Father Christmas. Get into the holiday spirit as you listen to live holiday musical performances, make some holiday crafts and enjoy historic cooking demonstrations. Help us decorate for a Christmas Ball and even learn a dance step or two.

The work of painter Adam Wolpert (adamwolpert.com) reflects a lifelong engagement with nature. This exhibit will highlight his exquisite plein-air landscape paintings, featuring prints of Bodega Bay and scenes from the gardens and forests of the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) in Sonoma County. November 2: "After the Storm" Book Signing, Oakland Museum of California, 5-7 p.m.

A rare collection of some of the most beautiful and captivating images of parklands in the East Bay Regional Park District, photographed by the acclaimed late photographer Bob Walker, is now available in a book to be released in November.

November 11: Walnut Harvesting, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 1-2:30 p.m.

October 20: Sunol's Annual Halloween Haunting--Journey to Neverland, Sunol Regional Wilderness, 5:15-8 p.m.

AAAARGH and avast there ye scurvy scum of all ages and genders! Peter Pan and his Lost Boys are in dire need of a new crew to enlist at Skull Island for an unforgettable Halloween adventure. Swabbies should be willing to deal with Cap'n Hooks' lost treasure, scaley reptiles, and the perils of a Halloween at sea and on land as they investigate the hallowed traditions of this ancient holiday. The faithful BaNana will lead the way to Neverland. Guided hikes begin every fifteen minutes starting at 5:15 p.m., last approximately 1 and 3/4 hours. and become more dark and spooky as the night progresses (nothing gory or disgusting). Earlier start times are best for younger children. Pre-registration limited to families and individuals only–no large organized groups! Children must be accompanied by an adult. September 22: Cajun-Zydeco Festival, Ardenwood Historic Farm. Gates open at 10 a.m. Live Music 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

This day will showcase some of the best Louisiana French Cajun/Zydeco music and dancing. Treat yourself to a delicious variety of Cajun food, specialty vendors, and dance lessons.
